PLANNING YOUR WARDROBE

Planning wardrobe for family portraits can be tough; it can be a challenge to find colors that work for everyone's skin tones. Luckily, there are a few options that tend to be fail proof! I recommend soft earth tones for a color palette. While you don’t want everyone too matching, you do want everyone coordinating. A good rule of thumb is to choose 3 coordinating colors and rotate between those. An example of this would be using the colors of blue, white and khaki, and altering placement of each color. For instance, a white dress with a blue sash on one subject, a blue shirt with khaki pants on another, and a white flowing shirt with blue capris on someone else, etc. The goal is to coordinate and tie everyone together by working within the same color palette but varying the positioning of the colors. It’s okay to incorporate a subtle pattern on one person too, such as one subject wearing a soft floral dress with all three colors. Patterns should not be too bold or your eye will go straight to that instead of faces. But a soft, understated pattern can add visual interest without being distracting. Below are some tried and true color combos that work well with just about every complexion:

Grey/blue, white & khaki
Blush/coral, white & khaki
Grey, blush & khaki
Navy, khaki & cream
Brown, blush and khaki
Sage, blush, and white/khaki

Colors to avoid:

Bright reds, yellows or oranges
Bright green
ANY loud or Fluorescent colors
Easter basket pastels, choose more muted colors instead

One of the most popular color combos is white, blue and khaki. It's simple to coordinate, looks good on everyone, and can easily be modified for different seasons. For fall portraits, this color combo can quickly be modified to cream, navy and dark khaki and yields gorgeous results.

Which color palette will you choose for your family portraits this year?
