THE MAKING OF MEANINGFUL IMAGES

RALEIGH AREA CHILDREN AND FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

Children's photography is a delicate balance of capturing moments as they naturally happen in perfect combination with gently drawing out sweet little poses and expressions from our subjects. One of my favorite parts of photographing children is watching for those little moments that just happen naturally. This precious portrait was photographed while our little subject was studying something off camera. While she was engrossed in what was happening around her, I was focused on her sweet, inquisitive and soft expression. This unplanned, but priceless capture ended up being one of the most meaningful images in her entire session. Every child is different and it's always a fun challenge working through what each child needs to set their session up for the success! A lot this happens during the session but there are some ways you can help prepare your little one for their photography session.

  • Don't surprise your child with a photography session; give them a little head's up that they will have a photo session soon.
  • However, it's important not to make a big deal of an upcoming portrait sessions. This can lead to nerves and anxiety, especially with more shy children.
  • Don't practice "saying cheese". During your session, we'll help elicit natural expressions from your child. For most children, practicing expressions in advance leads to forced, unnatural expressions and a self awareness that may keep us from capturing genuine emotion in their images.
  • Involve your child in narrowing down clothing suggestions. This is especially important for children with sensory sensitivities.
  • In the event of a meltdown just before your session, let us help. Often times having another adult talk a child through what they're experiencing can be especially helpful. This also helps us earn their trust, and establishes that we are on their team, which benefits the photography session in general.

We love all the challenges that come with photographing families and children throughout the Raleigh area. Every single child and family dynamic is different and figuring out the key to unlocking those genuine emotions and expressions from each of our subjects is one of the best parts of this job. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you have frozen a memory of child in the form of a portrait that not only shows their likeness, but also shows who they are.

We can't wait to work with your family! When you're ready to start planning your photography sessions, get in touch!
